Secular Sanctity and the Meaning of Life - 3110 Words

The Meaning of Life Introduction The secular saint, like the hero saint, is motivated by love. While Augustine tells us that the hero saint is moved by love for God, the secular saint as the humanist thinkers of our modern age assert is moved by love for self and/or fellow man. Thus, love appears to be at the heart of the meaning of life. Throughout history love has been given many different names. For the pagan Greeks, there was eros (erotic or sexual love), agape (spiritual love), and phileos (a kind of platonic, friendly love). For the Christians, love was best described as caritas charity (a selfless love of God and neighbor). The modern world, which turned in a sense away from the Christian concept of reality, adopted a more ego-centric idea of love of love that was not selfless but selfish. If todays secular saint finds meaning in life through love (with the object of that love subjective, i.e. different for each individual), for me the meaning of life is less subjective: Whether one is a secular or a hero saint, he is called to attain a level of holiness and virtue ultimately ending in union with God (the spirit of love). Augustines idea of love as having its beginning and its end in God may be considered the fruit of long meditation upon the question of the meaning of life. That fruit is there for any and all to taste. Therefore, this paper will show why I believe the meaning of life to be grounded in the caritas of Augustine: the perfect love hinted at byShow MoreRelatedThe Debate Of Embryonic Stem Cell Research1711 Words   |  7 Pagespluripotent, meaning they are capable of undergoing directed differentiation and developing into a plethora of cell types. The Problem with 6 Digits Dating Free Essays

What started of as a noble act of saving some memory space turned out to be a quake, capable of trembling the world to its core. When maiden inventors set the year with two digits instead of four, little did they realize that by 1st January 2000 it would cause arithmetic delinquencies and confuses the entire system. For example, a bank transaction on the 25th of July 1997 would be recorded as 07/25/97. We will write a custom essay sample on The Problem with 6 Digits Dating or any similar topic only for you Order Now Many software add the value 1900 to the two digits code to calculate the actual year. A credit card charged on 1st of January 2000 would have to bear the interest of 99 years because the transaction date would read 01/01/00. This means the computers assume that the same transaction took place on 01/01/1900. Another major problem with six digits dating occurs when we tend to compare the pre and post – 2000 dates. For example, 01/09/99 and 01/01/00, when converted into a simple code they would read 990901 and 000101 respectively. Obviously 990901 is older than 000101, which in reality is not true. As the computers cannot process the current date as year 2000 marches in, it is also unable to calculate the leap year. All years divisible by 4 is considered as a leap year except for centuries. A century will be considered as a leap year only if it is divisible by 400. For example, 1996 is considered as a leap year because it is divisible by 4 (1996 4 = 499) wherelse 1997 is not (1997/4 = 499.25). On the hand the hand, 1900 is not a leap year for it is not divisible by 400 (1900/400=4.75). Year 2000 is a leap year for it is divisible by 400 (2000/400 = 5) (with reference to explanation from: http://www.ast.cam.ac.uk/RGO/leaflets/leapyear/leapyear.html). As we step into the year 2000, existing computers will not be able to differentiate the two digits year anymore. The â€Å"00† date field might be assumed as 1900 instead of 2000. Thus calculations that involve a date would provide wrong answers. On the 1st of January 2000, computers will define this day as 01/01/00 and regards the year as 1900, leaving us 99 years behind time. This will interrupt public services, bank transactions, loan interest calculations and many more, causing formidable loss of billions of dollars. Only a few systems could be spared from the Y2K and it has been estimated that there are 500 billion lines of application code worldwide, with some 85% of which needs to be corrected. Various reports stated that by the turn of the millennium, as much as 50% of all businesses which failed to address the year 2000 challenge would fall apart. Besides being deadly, expensive and extensive, the year 2000 problem affects hardware (BIOS, real-time clocks), embedded firmware, languages and compilers, operating systems, random number generators, database management systems, transaction-processing systems, banking systems, PBX, flight scheduling and any other system that deals with dates. Surfing the net would prove that the Y2K’s awareness level is growing with more more sites dedicated to this problem. Managers and IT resources are becoming heavy-hearted thinking about their future as 31st December 1999 rolls in. Knowing that there is going to be an IT disaster does not help much especially when there are few resources to handle the problem. A rough estimation to create solutions for the Y2K issue concentrated on something like US $400 -600 billion dollars worldwide. An additional 200,000 COBOL programmers will also be required. Organizations are not the only ones that are going to suffer from the virulent millennium bug, it can be anyone, even a personal computer user. Entrepreneurship Theory Process And Practice-Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Entrepreneurship Theory Process And Practice? Answer: Introducation The founders of Cosworth Engineering were Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth. They both met with each other at the Lotus racing car Manufacturer Company. Mike Costing who had a strong enthusiasm about motor racing car joined Lotus in 1953. By the year 1956, he became the technical director of the Lotus. Keith Duckworth took a job in Lotus after graduating in mechanical engineering and both of them here decided to establish Cosworth. The main objective of setting up a racing car and engineering company were building up an exciting living with racing car and engines. However, both founders had passion and interest of racing cars and that worked as an inspiration for setting up this company. In earlier times Cosworth made racing cars for rich and affluent individuals however, the premises that were located at Shaftsbury Mews were temporary. Therefore, it was difficult to install a dynamometer on the racing cars at that premise. Ultimately, the company got the place for installing the dynamometer at Friern Barnet, which was an old coaching stable used by a wood merchant. Around 1959, an interest had been growing up across Europe regarding Formula Junior and Cosworth utilized this opportunity. Cosworth developed an engine, modified version of 105E engines and signed a contract with lotus to supply this engine to them for Lotuss 18 Formula Junior cars. However, after facing many problems Cosworth successfully built Cosworth-modified Ford 105E engines and supplied it to Lotus. Even, Cosworth made some modified parts of the racing cars for other engine builders to use. Isomorphism and its Implications in the Industry Isomorphism is a term used in business for indicating the similarities of the procedures or structures of any one organization and that to in other organizations by either imitating the structures or maintaining an independent development within similar constraints (Tan, Shao and Li 2013). In the racing car industry and from the case study, there are numbers of isomorphism that can be seen. In 1959, an interest regarding new racing car Formula Junior had been growing across Europe. This car was built for primary level racing drivers who wanted to have relatively low-cost machineries. The engine for the Formula Junior was built at the initial stage from Fiat 1100cc Millecento engine and modified afterwards that would be suitable for Formula Junior. At later stage, Cosworth business project had developed an appropriate engine from Fords 105E engine from Anglia model. In 1960, the Cosworth modified and developed Ford 105E engine as the most booming engine for the Formula Junior. This is an example of isomorphism as Cosworth started to modify from the Ford engine, imitating the structures of the engines Ford 105E. However, the Lotus Company bought the 105E engines from the Ford company and the Cosworth modified it and returned it to Lutus. Here the example of isomorphism is based on the similarities of structures of a product shared between different business organizations (Robson 2017). The basic components of the Ford 105E are fixed. Based on these components a modification was done by Cosworth. End-state Achievement for the Cosworth and its Implementation Strategies The end-state that the Cosworth wanted to achieve was its objective in the beginning of the business project. At the time of establishment, the objectives of the founders were making an interesting and exciting living from racing cars and its engines (Hagertyinsurance.co 2017). However, they did not have strict or specific purpose. The wanted to exploit some time behind their passion and utilized their money when needed. The founders followed a number of strategies for implementing their objectives. The first strategy after setting up the Cosworth was making an agreement with Lotus, which was also a manufacturer company of racing cars. The Cosworth provided 105E modified Ford engine to the Lotus for a fixed price. The second strategy was clearing money at right time of the suppliers and distributors and bought instrument on a self-financing basis. However, the strategies were followed by the earlier steps and implemented accordingly (Jenkins 2015). The third strategy was gathering enough money for new building. However, in 1964, the company moved to Northampton. The fourth strategy was developing Cosworth DFV engine and sell it. The success of making DFV engine had led them to fulfill its demand around late 1970s and early 1980s. However, cosworth had diversified activities although the racing car was the centre of its activity. It has other expertise areas such as aerospace, defense and other variou s mainstreams automotive (Jenkins, Ambrosini and Collier 2016). Strengths and Weaknesses of Cosworths various locations Cosworths first location was in Shaftsbury Mews, London W8, which was small workshop. This premise had weakness that created obstacles to install a dynamometer. In addition to that, this place was temporary and not suitable for testing the engine, by which noise and fumes were exhausted. However, one of the founders, Duchworth had found the right place, which had capacity for installing the dynamometer. The new place was an old coaching stables and a wood merchant used the place. The new location was Friern Barnet in north London. The cosworths third location was in Kenningdale Road, Edmonton. The advantages were the Cosworth tied up with Lotus for supplying engines and original equipment fittings for Lotus. The Lotus Elite cars were built in Kenningdale Road, Edmonton, which became the third location for Cosworth. The fourth location of the Cosworth was Northampton, which was 50 miles away from north of London. In 1963 the company ware able to gather enough cash to shift. They wanted a place, which were huge and had capacity to hold 50 employees. The former office was capable of holding 28 employees and quite feasible for the company. Competitive Nature of the Industry: Earlier in 1980s, there was the introduction to the Formula 1 availing a new technology of engines-turbo charging. As per the regulation from 1966, the engine either operated at 3000cc normally or 1500cc turbo-charging. The market situations prevailing then indicated 1500cc turbo charge would prove to be uncompetitive. Renault, however, accepted Formula 1, applied this formulation to their own car, and successfully witnessed the potential of the same. Following this, the other teams too landed up to the idea of 1500cc turbo-charging. Cosworth developed a newer version of DFV-the turbo charged DFX in 1975. During the 1970s, however, Cosworth began to develop for the betterment and introduced a rally engine, the BDA, which had the potential to beat the Ford Escort rally engines. They successfully innovated the high-performance road engines. All the innovative measures didnt bear fruit as designs to motor-cycle engines and automatic transmissions needed an abortion (Jenkins 2015). Utilizing Competitive Forces for Competitive Advantages: In 1965, Colin Chapman, the owner and the CEO to Lotus, approached Keith Duckworth to examine the innovative measure surrounding Formula 1 engine, which had to face the challenge regarding the regulatory accessory, oriented to perform at 1500cc or 3000cc, the former being turbo-charged. Lotus have been well performing at 1500cc while in contrast to this, Coventry Climax made an announcement to invest for a 3000cc engine, he being the supplier, this became a hindrance for Chapmans production, who then decided to approach other suppliers, potential enough to deliver the support for grand pix and world Championships (Robson 2017). Chapman in the next attempt approached Walter Hayes of Ford, who seemed interested in Formula 1 with an estimation of 100,000 Euros also with an investment towards Formula 2 termed as Four-Value Series-A. This got well constructed in 1966 with its initial appearance on 1967. In contrast to the success enjoyed by Ford, Walter was witnessed to offer misgivings towards the potential of Lotus. Ford made an agreement to develop the access to Formula 1 by the other teams as well. Next evolution by the Cosworth DFV surrounded the change of power earlier linked with the vertically integrated teams likely, Ferrari, BRM and Honda to the companions who were willing to build chassis and purchase engines from Cosworth. Cosworth was now potential to sell engines freely to any buyer. The success of Formula 1 during 1970s fetched a larger customer base. Competition and Cooperation with the Rivals: The cooperation of Cosworth with the Ford company witnessed its success in 1967, which initially when proposed the later with Formula 1 bonded an agreement to develop a four-cylinder Formula 2 engine emerging the FVA in market, to eventually create, double four value that DFV. However, on receiving misgivings, the Cosworth DFV changed the power balance from the companies focusing on the built of their own engines to the ones interested in constructing chassis and was proved to be a customer to Cosworth, including various teams. Initially, Ford with the potential use of DFV had a promising customer base while, in 1970s, Cosworth made the DFV available to any buyer as it became important for Hayes to strengthen Cosworth rather than the financial gain for Ford. Cosworths and Fords Strategies towards Motor-Racing Industry: Most of the innovative measures including the high-performance road going engines, which were in use for maximum of Ford cars. Formula 1 was also proposed to be used as a methodology for motor cycle engines. This innovative measure utilizing the same formulation for cars did not hold much potential for the motorcycle configuration. This was a failed measure from the innovative perspective and required to be aborted (Sriram, Gopalarathnam and Misenheimer 2012). Witnessing Cosworths sucesss in 1970s, the United Engineering Industries (UEI) unit purchased the same providing a separate division, which again in 1988 passed in the hands of Cartlon Communications and following the pass on to Vickers plc for about 163.5 million Euros. The Vickers plc also had the ownership of rolls-Royce, which along with Cosworth was sold to Audi group. Finally, the racing side of Cosworth was sold to Ford, the analysis prove it to be the rightful owner paying a worth of 50 million Euros. VRIN Sources of Cosworth: The formula 1 introduced was valuable for Lotus as Cosworth provided the formulation, which again Ford supported to increase its profile at that point of time with a formulation F2 to build a DFV. This formed an integral part of the engines and many cars using this formulation were potential to win in the world championships (Ellram, Tate and Feitzinger 2013). In context to rarity, at that point of time 1500cc was considered to be uncompetitive in the market. Introducing such a formulation with valuable collaborations proved to be beneficial in the turbo charging concept. The success of the formula 1 concerned with the DVF potentially increased its customer base and was available for any affording party. This success rate led the competitors to develop a more potential system of 12-cylinder engine, this included V12 Eagle Weslake tried by Brabham BRM teams. This imitable approach drastically was a failure. So it can be deduced as an imperfect imitation (Dey 2016). This formulation was substitutable as the Brabham group approached Alfa Romeo to provide them the 12-cylinder engine. The other groups looked for better performance utilizing the improvised road holdings through innovative measures that just used the shape of DFV to improve the streamlined effect to increase the speed (Gu et al. 2017). Implication of Changes in Ownership: The purchase of the racing department of Cosworth to Ford was an important change of ownership, orienting which Neil Ressler, the Fords vice president of the department of research revolving around the vehicle technology became the chairman as the cosworth racing got incorporated into Fords Premier Performance sector. Then, Nick Hayes was promoted to concentrate on the technical side of the business. Again a change in hand was to the owners of the US champ cars in 2004. Around 2006, Cosworth was announced to lay 40% of its375 employees in the UK. The major reasons surrounded around the change of formulations in formula 1. This resulted in freezing of engine designs. Another reason for the same was that one of its customers switched to Toyota Formula 1. The year 2013 witnessed a return of Cosworth, supplying F1 to Marussia Team but this was a short-term effect due to regulation developments that was only supported by major automotives (Tallman, S. and Jenkins, M., 2015). However, Cosworth has diversified into activities surrounding mainstream automotives, aerospace and defense with the core ethos in racing. Keith Duckworths Cognitive Map and Unnoticed Threats and Opportunities The cognitive maps are the psychology of the Keith Duckworth that would help him to run the Cosworth. The psychological elements are the building blocks that have worked as a motivation for building the company and utilized the founders passion for racing cars and engines (MacKay 2012). Keith Duckworth had to take the initiatives to run the business earlier as the other partner Mike Costin had a three-year service agreement with Lotus. Initially Duckworth had taken unofficial help from Costin and used his own funds to run the business. The cognitive map behind this idea was developing a business and taking the initiates. Here the unnoticed threats for Duckworth were that his initiatives were ran into completely different direction what he had thought. Here he took a number of risks. He arranged all the funds and if the business would not succeed, his sole funds would be destroyed due to unplanned initiatives. The second initiative was searching a new premise for installing the dynamometer in the racing cars. However, the first premise was temporary and he needed a permanent premise. Duckworth invested his money and saw it as an essential investment, keeping in mind that this investment is for the future of the Cosworth. The other firms at that time were not using dynamometer in the racing cars, however, if Cosworth would incorporate it that would be an extra marking point for the company. Duckworth ultimately found the place and took it as companys new business spot. The cognitive map behind this is to grow business and identify those areas that could be companys specialty. This were the great decision from Duckworth, however, it contained some threats as he invested the whole money. It could be as if the idea of dynamometer would not click and resulted in loss of investment. Gathering Knowledge about Cosworths Situation In business term, gather knowledge identifies with through and in depth understanding of the business functions (Holsapple 2013). This is an integral part of the successful business and an analytical process in the business. The problems faced by the Cosworth had resolved by its founders and in this process they gathered some knowledge. For an example, when Duckworth decided to shift its first business premise to its second one it had some aims and targets to fulfill, which were related to installing dynamometer. The funds that were invested had utilized on its fullest potentials and in this process, the founders could gather some knowledge. Their knowledge was think right ways at right times. Installing dynamometer and investing funds were an incident that helped the firm and business to grow. It was an good investment and one of the founders could think it at the right time when there were no other companies that were used dynamometer in their racing cars. As the Duckworth had invested the initial funds for the business purpose of Cosworth, he could gather knowledge from this also. The knowledge was as similar with entrepreneurship theory. The entrepreneurs invest money in return with risks or rewards (Kuratko 2016). Here, Duckworth also invested money with number of risks or rewards, however, he got the rewards and his business grew as a most successful one. Awareness Concerning the Knowledge Awareness can be created from the gathered knowledge about the business strategies. This type of awareness can be employed into various other ways in future for gathering more knowledge in a diversified manner (Hill, Jones and Schilling 2014). However, in this case study, the awareness created from the knowledge is that managing things in a right manners. Every founder should keep in mind that he or she has to manage things in a right manners and do things at right times. From the case study, there are number of instances for this where mostly Duckworth had doing things at right time. He decided to invest money whenever he urgently felt for it. However, it could create some risks for him. Knowing the risk factors, he took it and utilized the money in a right manner. The initial official investment was from Duckforths part. However, the other business enthusiasts can be aware from Duckworths situation and initiatives. Creation of New Value from the Relationships with other Organizations New value creation could be developed from the relationship that a company has with other companies and the primary company is taking helps from other companies to grow its business (Amit and Zott 2012). The company in the case study, that is Cosworth had good business terms with Lotus Company, which were a car manufacture company. The Cosworth had an agreement with Lotus to provide Modified 105E engines for the Lotuss 18 formula junior cars. However, the Cosworth company supplied in total 125 engines for the formula junior cars to the Lotus. The agreement was like this: the Lotus bought the 105E engines from the Ford and sent it to Cosworth. The Cosworth Striped down the engines and developed a modified version that would be called modified 105E engine and returned it to Lotus again. The dealing happened in terms of fixed price and that would help the Cosworth, when they needed money. However, at that time, every other company tried to make the modified version but that did not happ en. In this case, the agreement between Lotus and Cosworth worked as a magic for serving the need. However, in 1959, there was an interest about racing formula junior cars across Europe. The agreement successfully could fulfill the need and helped both the companies to grow. The profit was shared between the companies and the relationship added some values that are the Cosworth got some financial benefits from the relationship with Lotus. Emergent and integrating perspectives The strategies, which are implemented by Cosworth, while supplying their engine to the other companies. The DFV of Cosworth transformed the balance of power which is different from integrated vertically teams, who indulged themselves in building their own engines such as BRM, Honda, Ferrari to the ones who concentrated on constructing the engines from the company Cosworth, which includes the team Lotus, Brahbam and Williams (Cosworth.com 2017). These organizations are focusing on the designing of cars, aerodynamics and systems of suspensions and other important aspects of handling the performances, this is based on the principle that if they have DVF engines, they would be competitive enough (Hitt, Ireland and Hoskisson 2012). In the year 1965, the CEO of Lotus name Colin Chapman approached to discover the company who could build a Formula 1 for Lotus. Therefore, that time, the Corsworth Company helped Lotus to build a new Lotus Formula 1 car which is having an engine forming an important part of the car. However, the DVF engine was publicly known as Ford DVF engine. This DVF engine won its first appearance for the first time at Grand Pix of Dutch at Zandvoort; Hitt, Ireland and Hoskisson 2012). Later in the year 1968, the Ford decided to make the engine available to the Formula 1 teams. With the creation of this DVF engine, the main strategy has been done by attracting people having enough went to Cosworth to buy the engines and the engine would be better to winning the races for many years. This is the main reason there are many British Formula 1 teams because due to the availability of engines. The implication of this strategy is that in the year 1971 and 1973, every Grand Pix in the series of World Championship who has won the car which was fitted to the Cosworth DFV engine. In the beginning, Ford has vetted the important customers for the DVF engine but in the early 1970s was free to make their engines sell to the people they want. In the eyes of Hayes, this was about strengthening the capacity of Cosworth rather than making money for Ford itself (Cosworth.com 2017; Hitt, Ireland and Hoskisson 2012). Implications of taking the critical perspective of Cosworth The implications of the strategy, is that in the year 1970s where Cosworth attracted more customers that the company can bring satisfaction. It has more number of customers and they make sure that every DFV should perform well and there must be standardized and personalized. The success of the eight cylinder of DFV led numerous competitors to move to more powerful engines of 12 cylinders such as the V12 Eagle Weslake, which was tried by another team; however this engine has proved to be unsuccessful. Hence, the abandonment of the project was done in the year 1974 which was really costly to develop. However, Ferrari has proved to be an effective concept with the boxer name Flat 12 engine, which demonstrates a greater performance in the middle of 1970,s as described by Gordon Murray who is the designer of Brabham teams. With the failure of the 12 cylinder engines, Gordon Murray has come to the conclusion that, with the development of the DVF engine to the 12 cylinder, the latter would leave a bad effect on the former which would lead to the end of the journey of DVF engine. This further lead to the explorations of other important potential suppliers such as Porsche and also contacted with the other groups such as Alfa Romeo in order to supply them with 12 cylinder engines which was similar to that of Ferari. The implications, in order to look it from a critical perspective, it could be stated that strategies followed by Cosworth in terms of selling DFV engine to the contractors having good money, can be stated that, the engine improved the importance of the companys prestige and lead to more successes. However, the engines were made in the name of the Ford, where it is needless to say, that Ford earned the reputation on behalf of the Cosworth, where this can regarded as the negative implications for the strategy to perform. The companies such as Lotus for themselves seek competitive advantages through the innovation of aerodynamics and allowing the DFV two tunnels, which created an area of low pressure under the car. Diversification and interconnectivity In the early of 1980, it saw the implementation of the new technologies in the Formula 1 engine. Since the year 1966, the regulations implemented where an engine either be 3000cc which is normally aspirated to 1500cc. The technology was back in the year 1966. However, in the year in the year 1977, Renault also entered the Formula 1 where they would be able to practice and demonstrate the capacity of turbo charging and firms such as Honda, Ferrari and Porsche. Cosworth developed the turbo charged engines which would generate the power levels in excess. Cosworth spread also began to spread their branches in the different areas (Cosworth.com 2017; Hills, Jones and Schilling 2013). With this diversification, it becomes a competition for the Cosworth to prove their worth in the midst of the competition. With the selling of their parts and technologies, it has built the capacity to improve its infrastructures. School Uniforms Essay

School Uniforms Essay School Uniforms Essay Should School Uniforms be in Public Schools? There has been a debate about children wearing uniforms in public schools. I am a parent of a child that wears a uniform to school. Picking out her clothes is so simple that she does it herself. My youngest daughter attends Sheffield Elementary School here in Lynchburg. She has no problem picking out her favorite jumper, white top, and favorite pair of shoes to start her day. All in all, there is not any fuss about â€Å"what to wear† in the mornings while she is getting ready. With that being said, I think it is a great thing that her school has a uniform policy. I think that all of our schools here in Lynchburg should take on this type of policy. I realize how easy it is getting my daughter ready for school verses my son. He has a slight dress code but nothing like the elementary school. My son goes to Heritage High School. They have a dress code versus a uniform policy. A dress code is a more laid back policy. It typically doesn’t require specific colors to wear. A uniform policy denotes exactly what a student is to wear to school at all times. Sheffield Elementary School has a uniform policy. They are to wear black, blue or kaki bottoms; shorts or pants for boys; shorts, pants, jumpers, skirts, skorts or capris for girls. As far as tops go; red, white, or blue polo’s and/or button up oxford style shirts are to be worn by both male and female students. Neither the shirts nor bottoms are allowed to have any visual logos on them unless they represent the school they are attending (Uniform Policy, LCS). In 2009, there was a school district in the Pocono Mountains, PA where the school superintendent made the decision to have a strict dress code that emulates a uniform. It improved the school tremendously. In fact within the first year of the new dress code program, the school had 1,000 less disciplinary referrals than the previous year (Bouselli). If our own schools would adopt an expanded policy similar to this one, I am sure there will be a decrease of the intolerable behavior in the schools within our community. By wearing uniforms there will be a decrease in bullying, minimize the evidence of gang involvement and reduce the violence that occurs by students being beat up over designer clothing (Fleming). Another huge point is for safety reasons (Fleming). In my own personal experience, when being part of a school field trip, students having the same color tops and bottoms on are great ways to find your group if you are ever separated. Students are more likely to have school spirit as well. This is also a great way to equalize each student (Fleming). Allentown, PA school districts will be enforcing a school uniform policy starting in the 2013/2014 school year (Esack). The assistant principal of Dieruff High School said that the majority of the freshman and sophomores that he questioned told him that they would prefer to have uniforms (Esack). When you have parents, students and faculty wanting to have a policy like this in place, then there will be a better balance to help improve the schools and its students. In the past, I had thought that having a uniform was ridiculous. I didn’t like the extra money I had to spend but, I have realized how wonderful it is. Like I stated earlier, picking out clothes for school is so simple, when you have a uniform there are no questions about what to wear. I can purchase some uniforms at a cheaper price but not one student knows where they came from. I have also come to realize that my daughter seems to make better grades while in this setting. My oldest daughter went to Sheffield and now attends Dunbar Middle School. She still makes good grades but, they were much better when she went to Sheffield. A study from a 1998 thesis at Ohio

Virtual Key Codes Used by Windows

Virtual Key Codes Used by Windows Windows defines special constants for each key the user can press. The virtual-key codes identify various virtual keys. These constants can then be used to refer to the keystroke when using Delphi and Windows API calls or in an OnKeyUp or OnKeyDown event handler. Virtual keys mainly consist of actual keyboard keys, but also include virtual elements such as the three mouse buttons. Delphi defines all constants for Windows virtual key codes in the Windows unit. Keyboard and VK Codes Here are some of the Delphi articles that deal with the keyboard and VK codes: Keyboard SymphonyDelphi For Beginners:Â  Get familiar with the OnKeyDown, OnKeyUp, and onKeyPress event procedures to respond to various key actions or handle and process ASCII characters along with other special purpose keys. In Delphi, the OnKeyDown and OnKeyUp events provide the lowest level of keyboard response. To use OnKeyDown or OnKeyUp to test for keys the user presses, you must use Virtual key codes to get the key pressed. Heres how to translate the virtual key code to the corresponding Windows character. Touch Me - Im UntouchableIntercepting keyboard input for controls that cannot receive the input focus. (a) How successful have the American Government and the U.S. Federal Essay - 1

(a) How successful have the American Government and the U.S. Federal Reserve been in running the American economy over the last - Essay Example Two years later, the economy is improving but remains volatile (Anderson, 2008). This paper identifies self correcting mechanism within the economy that could help stabilize the economy. Moreover, this paper describes fiscal policy that can be used by the government to help mitigate the impact of the recession. The middle class continues to shrink as the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. These are all signs of a recessive gap in the economy (Anderson, 2008). Although the U.S. economy has bounced back, it has yet to reach equilibrium and still runs on a large budget deficit. This paper will analyze key market indicators before identifying if the response by the American Government and the Federal Reserve was sufficient. The first key indicator of the economy is the consumer price index. The CPI is a measure in the changes of price levels of consumer goods and services purchased per capita (Zeleny, 2011). The CPI measure the prices of the market basket of goods that are most sold and utilized by consumers. The graph below is an illustration of the 2011 Consumer Price index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. On average, this graph indicates that prices rose across the board. This could be an indicator of increasing interest rates. When the dollar is devalued, businesses tend to increase their prices. This graph specifically focuses on the major foods and beverages which are a part of the primary market basket items. While prices have risen for the most part, the efforts taken by the government and the Federal Reserve have softened the impact of the recession (Anderson, 2008). In terms of the economy, Adam Smith proposed the theory of the â€Å"invisible hand in his work entitled â€Å"The Wealth of Nations†. In this book, Smith proposed that a capitalist economy is guided by an invisible hand that self corrects for both inflationary and recessionary gaps (Hodgson, 2007). Specifically, a recessionary gap indicates that all available re sources are not being utilized. That is to say that the economy is operating below its most optimal level and is consequentially inefficient. In order to correct for this, the short-term aggregate supply curve must move to the right gradually towards equilibrium because of the underutilization of labor. This means that unemployment rates are higher than the actual percentage. The consequence of this is that the cost of labor is driven down, which increases access to employment. If the government deems it necessary to intervene in the economy then they are likely to utilize fiscal policy to correct recessionary gaps. Fiscal policy is primarily accessed through the use of taxation and government spending. The government can increase the amount of disposable income for individuals by decreasing taxes. This in turn increases consumer spending which is a factor in calculating the GDP. If consumers are able to consume more, that means that producers are able to sell more goods which could in turn lead to the creation of more jobs. Another action the government can take is the increase of transfer payments. Individuals receiving transfer payments will have more disposable income which means they will consume more goods (Hodgson, 2007). Business confidence is another factor indicating that the economy is showing signs of survival. A program that was recently implement was Cash for

Explore the dramatic Essay Example for Free

Explore the dramatic Essay Lady Capulet, mother of the young Juliet, was only about 13 when she married the older Lord Capulet. And now that Juliet has reached the age of teens where girls are meant to be ready for marriage and childbirth, she is being pushed to look for a husband, and that is arranged to be Paris. Although Juliet does not exactly despise or even dislike Paris, she does not feel comfortable marrying or attempting to get to know someone who has been forced upon her without consent from her. Although Lady and Lord Capulet might have the title of a married couple they are not close at all. Behind his back Lady Capulet makes remarks and jokes that demise Lord Capulet such as when Lord Capulet calls for a sword to fight, she laughs and says that he should instead be calling for a crutch as he is too old to fight. A crutch, a crutch! Why call you for a sword? But on the other hand, when Lord Capulet is violently screaming at Juliet for disobeying him and refusing to marry Paris and then threatens to throw her out of the house, Juliet looks to her mother for support but alls eh says is that she should listen to her father. And even when she asks for the nurses help she says that she better do what Lord Capulet says as she does not want to lose her job by going against what Lord Capulet, her employer and man of the house she works in. So although they might not agree with anything the man in charge says, they (the nurse and Lady Capulet) wouldnt dare go against him. As a mother, Lady Capulet is not very close to Juliet at all. When she wants to get the point across that she should be prepared to marry and that she should try and get to know Paris as he is the one she should marry, she brings the nurse in to try and help her connect with Juliet and get to her as the nurse is the one who really brought up Juliet from a young age. But rather than stick up for Juliet in her case that she does not want to marry yet, nurse agrees with Lady Capulet and she even makes an old fashioned joke that embarrasses Juliet and which Lady Capulet seems to dislike and disagree with but in reality it is what Lady Capulet is trying to say. Thou wilt fall backward when thou comest to age , wilt thou not, Jule? This joke is portraying that in those days women were not meant in society for much more than pleasuring the men and having babies. It is an honour that I dream not of. Here Juliet is summing up how she really feels about the option of marrying Paris. Although she is being polite to her mother by saying it would be an honour but she also makes it clear that it is not an honour that she doesnt want to have. Then Lady Capulet starts to explain how many girls the same age or even younger than Juliet become wives and even mothers and she too was Juliets mother around the same age. This might seem to Lady Capulet that she is convincing Juliet that marrying is a good thing and she can do it at that young age but she could easily be making Juliet second guess the chance of getting married because she can most likely see what Lady and Lord Capulets relationship is like and that they are very detached from each other and are not very close as a married couple. Today the idea of getting married at an age of 13 or 14 sounds absurd and it is even illegal under todays laws. But back in the Juliets time it was common and accepted that men would usually marry women much younger than them, sometimes even half their age. Women did not have many rights such as voting, they rarely went to school and any money they inherited or managed to earn if the were lucky enough to have a job would go straight to their husband or the closest man to them such as their father or brother. This was not only accepted by the men but by everyone. Women just accepted that their sole purpose was really to make babies, look after them and as sex toys. But in todays society it is very different as women are allowed to make any choices they want, they have the same rights as men and they are allowed to choose themselves when they want to get married or have a child as long they agree with their partner. Juliets fathers thoughts also changed over time as at first he says to Paris that although he can give him Juliets hand in marriage, he must also woo her and get her to love him. As soon as their marriage is put in jeopardy when one of Paris kinsmen is killed, Lord Capulet is desperate to have the wedding and not have Paris shy away from Juliet so he instantly says to Paris that he can marry Juliet straight away and he comments on how they should marry three days time, as two would be too short notice. But fettle your fine joints gainst Thursday next, to go with Paris to St. Peters church. This also shows that Lord Capulet is not in complete control of everything and when the marriage of Juliet and Paris is put into danger, Lord Capulet desperately fights to save the marriage to rushing it to three days time. When Romeo and Juliet first meet at Capulets party they instantly fall in love and they have a fatal first kiss which sends them into the turmoils of love. Afterwards, when they both find out who the other is, they realize that they are meant to be on opposite sides of a bitter family feud. Tis but thy name that is my enemy; thou art thyself, though not a Matague. Before their kiss, which Romeo is much more eager to have, Romeo and Juliet exchange words which are in the form of a sonnet, the only one in the whole story. This sole use of a sonnet accentuates the feelings in their words and importance of the scene. Romeo starts by talking about how he needs to soften Juliet with a kiss but Juliet holds back and says how in praying pilgrims pray and kiss by holding their hands against someone elses. Romeo comments on how hat they do with their hands, they should do with their lips. O then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do. As Juliet tempts and holds Romeo back, the text is written in the form of a sonnet as Shakespeare tries to emphasize the deep feelings being exchanged between Romeo and Juliet. The sonnet uses rhyming to add a feeling of a poem to the text. The use of this single sonnet in the whole story also singles it out for the reader to know that it is very important and highlights a key point in the relationship of Romeo and Juliet as it is the first time they met each other. Which mannerly devotion shows in this And palm to palm is holy palmers kiss. Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair. As shown in these alternate rhyming sentences, the text shows both Juliets teasing and Romeos eagerness. It is also rhythmic and adds flow to the conversation between the two star crossed lovers. The balcony scene is where Romeo and Juliet first express their true and deep feelings for each other. The balcony that at firsts separates Romeo and Juliet from touching each other acts as a symbol of the barriers of their familys history against each other. The balcony scene is an intense and decisive scene in the story as it is the point from where Romeo and Juliet cannot turn away from each other. It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon. When he talks of the east he is talking about how the sun (Juliet) rises and that she is the one which lights up his heart. Moon is often coincided with virginity and she, the sun, must kill the moon, or her virginity, and he is the one to help her do so. I am too bold, tis not to me she speaks: two of the fairest stars in all the heaven This could come as a certain amount of surprise to a reader as it shows how Romeo does not have incredible amounts of confidence about getting to Juliets heart. But then he also talks how she is a star and that she is something out of this world and when she rests her chin in her hand he wishes that his hand was hers just so that she could get the opportunity to touch her face. See how she leans her cheek upon her hand! O that I were a glove upon that hand, That I might touch that cheek! As Juliet calls for Romeo she offers to give up her family name without hesitation and that her family name does not mean anything because she is in love. And Ill no longer be a Capulet thou art thyself, though not a Montague whats in a name? With loves light wings did I oerperch these walls, for stony limits cannot hold love out. Here Romeo is talking about the wall of Juliets house which he has to climb to get to her is like the family difference which separates Romeo and Juliet from being happy together. But Romeo explains that like the high boundaries of the wall, the family feud they are tied up in is no match for the love Romeo has and he will not be stopped from loving her. Juliet is much more cautious and nervous about Romeo being caught and facing the punishment if he does. If they do see thee, they will murder thee. Romeo, as shown before is much more eager to be one with Juliet while Juliet is constantly slightly holding back. While Romeo is willing to swear on anything for his love for Juliet, Juliet says they are better off if they do not swear on anything at all as it is too sudden. And when Juliet insists that she has to leave Romeo asks why she has to leave him so unsatisfied. O wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied? But then Juliet proposes that if Romeo wants to prove his profound love for her he should set up their marriage as soon as possible. If that thy bent of love be honourable, thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow. She also seems very reluctant to let him leave as she is forced to go back inside as she has been called for. Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow. Here, as like earlier in the balcony scene, the words of Juliet rhyme for more affect as it is a very heart felt sentence. Rhyming also shows up in the next two lines when Romeo is talking, so Shakespeare must have felt that this was an important or true moment of love between Romeo and Juliet as there was earlier in the balcony scene. The balcony scene is most likely the scene with the greatest amount of feelings being expressed which are revealed through language and forms of writing. Shakespeare does a very good job of making priorities stand out by making the language the text is written in different from text he usually writes. The sonnet is a fantastic way to capture the attention of a reader and create an atmosphere really felt between the two star crossed lovers. In the two films, the original version and the modern version, the balcony scene is portrayed in different ways but they also have many similarities. In both films, Romeo and Juliet or on opposite sides of a bitter family feud and have to endure the fighting between the two families. The modern film, as expected, is very modernised. Rather than use swords for fighting, the two families have weapons such as guns and small hand knives.

Tupac :: essays research papers

Shakur and Wallace are known as two of the greatest rap artists of all time. Both of these men were murdered in the past 6 years. After the death of Shakur, there was a lot of controversy about who had killed him and if he was really dead or not. He was killed in 1996 so the talk had stopped for many years until last month. Before I get into the new findings, I’ll give you some background information. Wallace and Shakur were once good friends and then became enemies. Both men would rap mean, nasty stuff about each other and Shakur even claimed to have slept with Wallace’s wife, Faith Evans. Wallace was an East coast rapper and best friends with Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. They were both affiliated with Bad Boy Entertainment, which had close ties to the Crips gang. Tupac came to be associated with the West Coast rappers and Death Row Records. Death Row was owned by Marion "Suge" Knight, a former NFL player and a guy who was always up to no good. Suge Knight and Tupac were both members of the â€Å"Bloods† gang. This gang happened to be archrivals of the Crips. One night in Las Vegas in 1996, Tupac was in town for a Mike Tyson fight. After the fight, he and his friends beat up a Crip by the name of Orlando Anderson in a hotel lobby. Anderson had recently taken part in assault up one of Tupac's bodyguards. After the beating Anderson and his Crip friends quickly planned to get revenge on Shakur. This is where everything began to get interesting. In a new report from the L.A. Times, it says that the Notorious BIG himself was in Las Vegas at the time and was most involved in Tupac's death. The report also says that the murder weapon was supplied Christopher Wallace who agreed to pay the Crips $1 million to kill Shakur. In the article it says, "he didn't just want Shakur dead. He wanted the satisfaction of knowing the fatal bullet came from his gun." This gun was a .40-caliber Glock pistol that Biggie reportedly handed over to the Crips in a Vegas hotel room. The day after the article ran, Wallace’s family said that he was not even in Las Vegas at the time. Another report also said that a friend claims that he and Biggie were in Teaneck, N.

Discriminatory practices in health Essay

Discriminatory practice in health and social care happens for many reasons including some important factors that are normally the cause of discriminatory practice for example a person may be discriminated against because on the basis of their diversity. One important discriminatory practice is because of culture. A person’s Culture is important to them and identifies who they are in the world. It is developed within the social group they are raised in, and can change when they are mature enough to decide for their selves what culture best suit them. In addition respecting a person’s culture is important for all concerned. It’s also important for the individual because it creates a sense of support and understanding. An example of Culture discrimination in a health and social care setting is that someone from a certain culture might not be given the same amount of support and advice then someone else from another different culture. This is one regular example of culture discrimination in health and social care. Another important type of discrimination is Disability discrimination. In health and social care, you will work with and support with various disabilities. The Disability discrimination Act makes illegal to discriminate against someone who has a disability. The act covers employment, access to goods, facilities and services of organisations, education, buying and renting a property and transport services. There has to be full accessibility for anyone with a disability. The organisation anyone works for will be required by law to have a policy in place regarding disability. An example of this type of discrimination in a health and social care is that the organisation might not place the necessary equipment’s for people who a disability to gain access to the health and social care settings. Another example from a health and social care setting is that the organisation might not place a policy regard ing disability. This will be against the law and also a form of discrimination. Another important discrimination practice in health and social care is the age of an individual. Age discrimination happens when someone is treated unfavourably because of their age, without justification, or is harassed and victimised because of their age. Age discrimination also happens when someone is denied something because of their age, for example there were controversies regarding giving older people drugs because of their shorter life expectancy, due to their age. Some people have argued that the money would be better spent on drugs for younger people. This is a massive discrimination against older people. An example of age discrimination in a health and social setting is that someone might not be provided a certain service because of their old age for example if they apply for a job as a nurse they might refuse their application because of their old age. This is a type of discrimination in a lot jobs but this was an example from a health and social service. Social class is another important type in which discrimination is based upon. Our social class is apparent from the place where we live. The higher the class, the better the place is kept and maintained. This inequality has also infiltrated health and social care. For example members of the department of health publication claim that the poor are more likely to get cancer than the rich, and their chances of survival are lower too. However at the heart of human rights is the belief that everybody should be treated equally and with dignity- no matter what their circumstances might be. An example of this in a health and social care setting is that some people might not be treated the same as other people who might be wealthier than them. This might be classified as social class discrimination. Sexuality is another important type in which discrimination is based upon. Sexual orientation can refer to a person who is attracted to another person of the same sex (gay and/or lesbian), the opposite sex (heterosexual), or both sexes which is known as bisexual. Discrimination against someone due to their sexual orientation is against the law. If someone feels discriminated against due to their sexual orientation or feels they are discriminated against they can seek legal help. Family status is also another type in which discrimination is based upon. This can lead to a variety of discriminations: against gay and/or lesbian parents, single parents, parents of different genders, parents of different. Cognitive ability is also another type of discrimination. Discrimination on the grounds of cognitive ability may arise because of a brain injury, a learning disability or difficulty, or a person’s social class or education. It can be easy to discriminate against people with cognitive disabilities but care must be taken not to do so.

Black Men and Public Spaces Essay

1. In â€Å"Black Men and Public Spaces,† Brent Staples the author, claims how he uncomfortable and bothered of how others view him, due to the fact he is African American. I believe the purpose of this essay is for the readers to realize that stereotypes don’t always have to be real. What I mean by this is that, if you are black you are not always going to be dangerous, wearing baggy clothes, and a gun inside your jacket. He is accused of many things that he doesn’t do just due to the fact he is a young black man, which white people are terrified off. He is an educated according to the reading and he doesn’t believe in violence. The purpose of this is to people to recognize that innocent lives are ending due to these stereotypes of discrimination and fake accusations. â€Å"Altering Public Space in Ugly Ways,† I believe that he uses his experiences and others that people are scared of people are assuming black men are potentially violent. An example in the book is with the young white lady, which he describes in the book as his first victim. This lady in front of Brent Staples was walking and he says she was not comfortable with the space he gave to her. She started walking faster and faster until, she eventually ran, and went away. She thought something bad was going to happen, but as Staples says he enjoys talking walks during the night due to his insomnia. He has never felt comfortable around people as they’re mind is basically survival of the fittest they will stay away to any possible harm, Brent Staples wants to avoid invading personal space. As he states, â€Å" I now take precautions to make myself less threating.† She is writing that during the nights of late evening he is walking with care around people. Questions on Writing Strategy: 1. The concept of Altering Public Space is abstract, but Brent Staples really convinces the reader that it occurs due to all this encounters he has in his essay. As it is formatted in 1st person, it grabs your attention that this all really occurred. He starts off with the woman at the beginning that ran from him, the one she describes as the first victim, then when he moved to New York he describes how people look at him in the subway after he changes from a suit to informal clothes, and how the women will hold their bags tightly as if he was there to rob them. This essay is sad, and he writes gloomy, the writer is expressing how it’s a shame that he is always viewed as a criminal. 2. In Staples essay he gives many examples, but in a great way, he avoided the piece sounding like a list of events. He talks in great detail about an event that occurred, than he changes his setting. For example when he used to live in Chicago then he uses transitions like â€Å" that was more than a decade ago.† And as well how changes the topic and explains his new role in that new city. He uses a lot of adjectives, and doesn’t write like a list.

The Short Game Story in Sportswriting

The Short Game Story in Sportswriting There are lots of different kinds of stories you can write on the sports beat, but probably the most basic is the short game story. A short game story, usually 500 words or less, follows a straightforward format that can be applied to any game you cover. The Lede The lede of your story should include the final score and some details about what made the game interesting. Generally, this means focusing on the efforts of an individual player. Let’s say a team’s star athlete is injured and a previously unheralded player comes into the game as a substitute. Not much is expected of this rookie but he defies expectations and plays a great game, leading the team to victory. Example 1: Second-string quarterback Jay Lindman, who had never played a down for Jefferson High School, came off the bench after star QB Fred Torville was injured Friday night and threw three touchdown passes to lead the Gladiators to a 21-14 victory over the McKinley High School Centurions. Or maybe the game is a close, seesaw battle between two evenly matched opponents, and is won in the final seconds by an especially dramatic play. Example 2: Second-string quarterback Jay Lindman threw the game-winning touchdown with just 12 seconds left to lead the Jefferson High School Gladiators to a 21-14 victory over the McKinley High School Centurions Friday night. Notice that in both examples we focus on the efforts of an individual athlete. Sports is all about the human drama of competition, and focusing on a single person gives the game story a human interest angle that readers will enjoy. The Body of the Story The body of your story should basically elaborate on the lede. If your lede was about the benchwarmer becoming the game’s star, then the body of the story should go into more detail about that. Often a simple chronological account works best. Example: Torville’s ankle was sprained when he was sacked in the first quarter. Lindman came into the game with low expectations but threw his first touchdown pass in the second quarter with a high, floating ball that receiver Mike Ganson snagged in the end zone. In the third quarter, Lindman was forced to scramble out of the pocket to avoid the rush but managed to fire a bullet to receiver Desean Washington, who made a diving catch at the goal line. The Wrap Up The wrap-up, or ending, of your story usually centers on quotes from the coach and players gleaned from post-game interviews or press conferences. Getting great quotes for sports stories can sometimes be tough- coaches and athletes often speak in clichà ©s- but a snappy quote can really be the icing on the cake of your game story. Example: â€Å"I knew Lindman could play but I didn’t know he could play like that,† said Gladiators coach Jeff Michaelson. â€Å"That was one heck of a game by a young guy who showed a lot of heart.† Washington said Lindman exuded confidence even in the huddle before his very first snap. â€Å"He just said, ‘Let’s do this to win,’† Washington said. â€Å"And he went out there and did it. That boy can throw the ball.†

Captain James Cook As God Of The Natives History Essay

Captain James Cook As God Of The Natives History Essay In anthropology one of the famous debates associated with the understanding of religious rituals and historical events about the death of Captain James Cook, the British discoverer of Hawaii. Whether the Hawaiian native took Captain Cook as their returning God Lono, or whether this may have been an understanding of apotheosis under the European myth model, in this essay I will analyse the anthropological debate, and in a similar case of apotheosis in which the discoverer of Mexico, Hernan Cortes was taken for the returning god QuetzalCoatl, according to records. A debate between Marshall Sahlins (1981, 1985, 1989, 1995) and Gananath Obeyesekere (1992) regarding the apotheosis or meaning of Hawaii’s discoverer Captain James Cook, has become quite famous in Anthropology. Captain Cook the leader of the English exploration ship â€Å"Resolution† came to Hawaii on January 17, 1779 and died by the native Hawaiians on February 14, 1779 (Beaglehole 1974; Hough 1995). On one si de of the debate, Sahlins disgusts that Cook’s death fits within the Hawaiians’ Makahiki calendrical rituals, where Cook is known as the returning God Lono and, his life must be ritually claimed by chief Kalaniopuu, who in turn is known as Lono’s rival God, Ku (1981:11). Cook’s case is tried to show Sahlins’s structural understanding of culturally attached historical processes (1981:7). On the other side of the debate, Obeyesekere questions Sahlins’s analysis is that his historical sources were taken for granted, and their credibility was not completely checked (Obeyesekere 1992:66-67). Furthermore, he disgust that Cook’s death was accidental. (Obeyesekere 1992:20). One of the most important points where the Sahlins-Obeyesekere debate appears to be important is the question of Captain Cook’s apotheosis or, promotion by the Hawaiians native. Obeyesekere makes a difference between â€Å"apotheosis† â€Å"(which he defines as a European myth of white man taken as a God by natives)†, and â€Å"deification† â€Å"(a Hawaiian custom in which a dead chief is conferred a God status)† (1992:91) Obeyesekere questions the apotheosis of Captain Cook as a fact. In his opinion, the apotheosis is a mystification which he attributes to the European imagination of the 18th century. His hypothesis is based on the myth models â€Å"pertaining to the redoubtable explorer cum civiliser who is a God to the natives† (Obeyesekere 1992:3). Obeyesekere claim that it is the Europeans that created the â€Å"European God for the natives,† therefore forging a myth of victory, imperialism and civilization (1992:3). Captain Cook as the God Lono Much of the debate of Captain Cook’s apotheosis seems to come from the issue of being called Lono, the name of one of the chief God in the Hawaiian temple. The problem comes from Cook’s classification as Lono is central to the alternative in terpretation suggest by Obeyesekere, which suppress Sahlins’s hypothesis on Captain Cook’s apotheosis. Cook’s name â€Å"Lono† is related with a variety of cases, the most unlikely being Hawaii’s political crisis at the time of Cook’s arrival and the potential need to give him a status that would guarantee his bond in Hawaiian warfare. Obeyesekere finds proof in the ship’s journals that Cook was identify as a human (1992:76). The ship’s officers acknowledge that Lono is a name given to other highly placed people. For this reason many had interpreted Lono as a title, when truly is a title.

Contemporary Quebec Nationalism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Contemporary Quebec Nationalism - Essay Example Among the main achievements of Quite Revolution, the health insurance plan and the education system should be noted. Daniel Johnson won the election as head of Union Nationale. He followed the same steps as those of Lasage but in different terms. He prepared the way of eliminating preferred reference of ethnicity as the major element when defining nationalism. Johnson preferred the sociological definition of the nation to ratify that the two countries exist in Canada. The nation duality did not depend on the ethnic origin but the culture of citizens. The liberation of the French-Canadian nation was enabled through the appropriation of the state. Rene Levesque founded the "movement souverainete-association† that later became "Parti Quebecois†. In 1967, Là ©vesque advanced a thesis that remained unchanged over years. The English Canada looked to simplify, rationalize and centralize powers to central government. The Quebec, on the other hand, went in the opposite direction. The nationalism that characterized the Quiet Revolution was on the basis of the dynamism of state action. In conclusion, nationalism has been sustained by the will to preserve and affirm the collectivity of the nation. Since the Quiet Revolution, Quebec has developed a nationalist ideology making the state of Quebec one of the major elements of identification of social, economic and political promotion of Francophone. Economically, francophones have been able to implement a network of financial, industrial and service businesses with the state’s support.
